Shot Silk Scarf for Barbara
My client Barbara wanted a shot silk scarf and, after ruminating over several shades of red and green, opted for a beautiful scarlet red and turquoise, highly shiny spun silk. The silk was very fine - 2/60 for those in the know - which would result in a delicate, lightweight scarf perfect for spring and summer.
For those of you who don't understand how the shot effect is achieved, it is a simple plain weave which combines hues from opposite sides of the colour wheel to create a beautiful, shimmering colour changing effect. To be truly effective the threads must be completely balanced, ie the exact number of threads in the warp (threads in the length) as in the weft (side to side), which may sound straightforward but it relies on the weaver having a constant beat during the weaving process. It's not as easy as it sounds!
Barbara also wanted a checked detail on her scarf, for added interest, and it really lifts the finished design.
